Berge Bulk has completed the installation of folding rotor sails on its Newcastlemax bulk carrier Berge Meru, marking the second vessel in its fleet to be equipped with wind-assisted propulsion supplied by Anemoi Marine Technologies.

The 208,000-dwt vessel was fitted with four rotor sails at Yiu Lian Dockyards in China in December 2025. Each unit measures 35 metres in height and five metres in diameter. Following completion of the work, the vessel has undertaken its first voyage, calling at Singapore.

The installation builds on Berge Bulk’s earlier deployment of the same rotor sail configuration on its Valemax vessel Berge Neblina, which entered service with the technology in June 2024. That project represented the company’s first use of Anemoi’s rotor sails and provided operational data that informed the subsequent installation on Berge Meru.

The rotor sails are designed to generate auxiliary propulsion by exploiting wind energy, enabling reductions in fuel consumption and associated emissions during normal trading operations. The folding design allows the units to be lowered when required, such as during port calls or when air-draught limitations apply, while remaining available for use at sea.

The supplier said the sails do not need to be lowered in severe weather conditions, as thrust generation can be stopped simply by switching the system off.

Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi Marine Technologies, remarked: “We are proud to complete our second project with Berge Bulk, bringing large-scale folding rotor sails to another vessel. Berge Meru demonstrates how wind propulsion can be integrated into commercial bulk carriers in a practical and operationally flexible way. We value Berge Bulk’s continued confidence in our technology.”

Anemoi’s rotor sail systems are approved by major classification societies and are designed for both retrofit and newbuild applications. The company positions the technology as a scalable efficiency measure that can support compliance with regulatory frameworks, including EEDI, EEXI, CII, EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime.
