H2SITE launches Norwegian subsidiary to advance ammonia-to-power technology for maritime sector

H2SITE has established H2SITE Norway AS in Bergen as a maritime innovation hub focused on advancing its ammonia-to-power technology toward commercial deployment in shipping applications.

The Spanish company’s ammonia cracking technology produces high-purity hydrogen on demand at or near the point of use, according to an announcement made on 21 January.

H2SITE said hydrogen produced from ammonia can be supplied directly to fuel cells, while onboard hydrogen can also be blended with ammonia in internal combustion engines. The company said this approach could enable vessels to operate without ammonia slip, while supporting flexible operating modes.

The systems are designed to be modular and scalable, suitable for onboard vessel applications as well as shore-based power systems, including zero-emission onshore power supply solutions. The company said its technology is intended to operate efficiently across a range of load profiles, including low-load conditions.

H2SITE said Bergen was selected to support pilot and demonstration projects with shipowners, shipyards and technology partners active in maritime decarbonisation. Norway’s maritime cluster provides an environment conducive to advancing such projects, according to the company.

“This coming year is about projects and execution, and we are looking into these collaborations to close the gap,” the company stated in its announcement.

The establishment of the Norwegian subsidiary represents H2SITE’s strategy to move its product from development toward real-world deployment, transforming ammonia from an energy carrier into what it describes as a usable, low-carbon power solution.
