Yinson GreenTech launches upgraded electric cargo vessel in Singapore, expands to UAE

Hydromover 2.0 offers increased energy storage capacity and can be fully recharged in under two hours, says designer.

Yinson GreenTech has deployed an upgraded all-electric light cargo vessel in Singapore and confirmed plans to extend its electric harbour craft operations to the United Arab Emirates.

The new vessel, Hydromover 2.0, has entered service in Singapore under Yinson GreenTech’s marinEV business. Designed by Incat Crowther, the 24-metre vessel is used to transport light cargo to ships anchored in the Singapore Strait while awaiting berths at the Port of Singapore.

According to the company, Hydromover 2.0 is powered by a lithium-ion battery system and offers a higher cargo capacity than the prototype Hydromover 1.0, which entered service in 2023 as Singapore’s first fully electric cargo vessel.

Incat Crowther said the upgraded design incorporates increased energy storage capacity and a revised electrical architecture intended to reduce power losses, delivering a threefold increase in operational range compared with the prototype. The vessel can be fully recharged in under two hours and includes digital systems for real-time analytics, route optimisation, collision detection and automated vessel management, the designer added.

Alongside the Singapore deployment, Yinson GreenTech has signed a bareboat charter agreement with Yacht International UAE, with delivery of Hydromover 2.0 vessels to the UAE expected by mid-2026. A memorandum of understanding has also been agreed with Yacht International UAE and Wilhelmsen Port Services to support the rollout of electric vessels across UAE ports.

Jan-Viggo Johansen, managing director of marinEV, commented: "The all-new Hydromover 2.0 sets unprecedented standards for the modern maritime industry. At the same time, the signing of new agreements in the UAE marks a pivotal step forward for marinEV and Yinson GreenTech."

He added: "They reinforce our commitment to transforming port operations through the combined power of electrification and digitalisation, and to shaping a smarter, cleaner, and more connected maritime future."

Sam Mackay, technical manager at Incat Crowther, remarked: "Seeing the Hydromover 2.0 enter service is a clear demonstration of how smart design and collaboration can accelerate the global transition to low and zero-emission shipping. The commissioning of new vessels for operation in the UAE underlines the proven performance and scalability of the Hydromover platform."
