Superalfuel will hold a workshop later this month examining how alternative marine fuels can be deployed safely and sustainably within port areas, the consortium said.

The event is scheduled for 21 January 2026 in Bar, Montenegro, and will be accessible both in person and online. It will bring together project partners and invited specialists to share results from ongoing work under the Superalfuel project.

Presentations will focus on the use of hydrogen, ammonia and methanol as marine fuels, with contributors outlining findings related to environmental performance, regulatory readiness and operational risk.

According to the consortium, discussions will include gaps in existing regulatory frameworks, comparative sustainability assessments for the three fuel types, and approaches to safety reporting and quantitative risk analysis. The agenda also covers modelling the potential consequences of accidental release or failure scenarios in port settings.

The programme is expected to include six presentations that address both technical challenges and policy considerations related to introducing alternative fuels into port infrastructure.

Superalfuel operates within the Adriatic–Ionian (ADRION) region and is examining how ports and maritime stakeholders can prepare for fuels that differ significantly from conventional marine energy carriers.

Attendance at the workshop is free, and registration is available through the project’s official channels.

The maritime industry is increasingly assessing hydrogen, ammonia and methanol as part of broader efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. However, port-side handling requirements, safety procedures and regulatory alignment remain under development, reflecting the distinct properties and risks associated with each fuel.
