Uniper Global Commodities SE (Uniper) and AM Green Ammonia India Private Limited (AM Green Ammonia) have signed a long-term binding offtake agreement for renewable ammonia certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO), the companies said.
Under the agreement, Uniper will offtake up to 500,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia from AM Green’s green ammonia projects in India. First shipment is expected as early as 2028 from AM Green Ammonia’s first 1 million-tonne-per-year plant, currently under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
The agreement was exchanged between Uniper chief executive Michael Lewis and AM Green founder and group chairman Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty in Ahmedabad, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the companies.
The companies said the contract is aligned with India’s National Hydrogen Mission and supports the country’s ambition to become a leading exporter of green hydrogen and green ammonia.
For Uniper, the agreement represents a step in developing a diversified portfolio of renewable and low-carbon molecules for European customers. The company said renewable ammonia can serve both as an industrial feedstock and as a potential hydrogen carrier, supporting decarbonisation across sectors including chemicals, fertilisers and refining, and, over time, shipping.
Uniper and AM Green Ammonia said they will continue working with certification bodies to ensure traceability and integrity reporting for European end-users.
AM Green Ammonia is a partnership among AM Green, Gentari, GIC, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. The company is developing a portfolio of green ammonia plants across Kakinada, Tuticorin, and Kandla.
The Kakinada plant reached Final Investment Decision in 2024 and is under construction, with site works underway, major contracts awarded and key approvals secured, the company said. Project partners include Casale, Air Liquide, Rely (a joint venture between Technip Energies and John Cockerill), Toyo, Gentari and NTPC Renewables.
According to AM Green, the project is expected to secure more than 600 local jobs and avoid around 2 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually once fully operational.
AM Green is a platform of the Greenko Group focused on producing renewable hydrogen and converting it into renewable ammonia. The company's architecture for generating renewable energy includes a pumped storage power plant supporting base load supply from 2.3GW of combined wind and solar capacity, using electrolyser and ammonia synthesis technology.
Düsseldorf-based Uniper operates in more than 40 countries with about 7,500 employees. The company has 14GW of flexible power-generating capacity and is a gas trader and LNG importer in northwestern Europe. It also operates gas storage facilities and hydropower plants in Germany.
