The Panama Canal Authority has signed a five-year cooperation agreement with marine fuel supplier Monjasa to support community-focused initiatives within the Panama Canal Watershed.

Announced on 13 January, the agreement establishes a framework for projects that address environmental protection, education, cultural activities, community development, and overall well-being in areas within the watershed.

The Panama Canal Authority said the initiatives will be aligned with its sustainability priorities for the region, which plays a central role in supporting canal operations and supplying water to surrounding communities.

The Panama Canal Watershed, locally known as the Cuenca Hidrográfica del Canal de Panamá (CHCP), provides the freshwater needed for canal transits and is considered a critical environmental and social resource.

Monjasa’s participation in the agreement reflects its operational presence in the region, where it supplies marine fuels to vessels transiting the canal. The company operates globally as a marine fuel supplier and trader serving a wide range of shipping customers.

While the agreement outlines the areas of focus for cooperation, neither party disclosed specific project timelines, funding levels, or individual initiatives to be implemented under the partnership.

The collaboration comes amid ongoing efforts by the Panama Canal Authority to strengthen water resource management in the watershed, which has faced increasing pressure in recent years from changing rainfall patterns and climate variability.
