Bureau Veritas Malaysia (BV Malaysia) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Straits Bio-LNG Pte Ltd to establish a strategic alliance focused on producing ISCC EU-certified sustainable biomethane.
The partnership aims to support the development of a sustainable biomethane liquefaction facility that meets environmental protection and regulatory compliance standards, according to the announcement.
Under the MoU, BV Malaysia and Straits Bio-LNG will work to establish a framework to ensure ISCC EU compliance across Straits Bio-LNG's supply chain. The collaboration also aims to advance sustainability practices while meeting regulatory requirements and promote certification benchmarks to support market credibility.
The MoU signing was witnessed by Dato' Mohd Nizam Abdulmalik, BV Malaysia Country Chief Executive, and Tan Soo Koong, CEO of Straits Bio-LNG.
The ISCC EU certification scheme is used to verify compliance with the European Union's renewable energy sustainability criteria, including for biomethane and other renewable fuels.
BV Malaysia stated the partnership reinforces its commitment to supporting the energy sector's transition toward lower-carbon fuels.
Established in 2024, Straits Bio-LNG is building a biomethane liquefaction, storage and export facility in Muar, Peninsular Malaysia, which is expected to be commercially operational in the fourth quarter of 2027. Once up and running, the company says it will procure compressed biomethane (CBM) from South East Asian markets and produce liquefied biomethane (LBM) to export to international markets.
