Van Oord has completed coastline maintenance work in Noord-Beveland, Zeeland, depositing 1 million cbm of sand on and in front of the Banjaard beach using its LNG-fuelled trailing suction hopper dredger Vox Apolonia.
The project, commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, was carried out using 100% bio-LNG fuel, according to the Dutch marine contractor.
The work formed part of the Dutch Coastline Care programme, which maintains the country's coastal defences through regular beach replenishment.
Van Oord said it will carry out further beach replenishment work in 2026 for the beaches at Goeree-Westkop and Heemskerk.
The use of bio-LNG represents an alternative to conventional LNG, with the fuel typically produced from organic waste materials. The marine fuel sector has seen growing interest in bio-LNG as vessel operators seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their fleets.
Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch directorate-general for public works and water management, has been working with contractors to reduce emissions from coastal maintenance operations.
The Vox Apolonia is part of Van Oord's fleet of LNG-fuelled vessels, which can operate on both conventional LNG and bio-LNG without technical modifications.
