World Fuel Services has coordinated the delivery of waste-based marine biofuel to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings' vessel Norwegian Viva in Piraeus, Greece, in collaboration with Greek supplier EKO.

The bunkering operation, which took place in December, represents one of the first commercial biofuel deliveries to a cruise vessel in Greece, according to World Fuel Services, a World Kinect company.

The delivery forms part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings' Sail & Sustain strategy and extends the cruise operator's biofuel programme across Southern Europe. The company has previously conducted biofuel operations in Gibraltar, Copenhagen, the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region, and an earlier delivery in Piraeus on July 20.

Kimberly Westmoreland, Senior Director Cruise and Energy Transition at World Fuel, said: "This collaboration demonstrates how the cruise industry can access certified alternative fuels right now — not someday. By uniting our global supply network with strong local execution, we're able to support forward-looking operators like Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings turn low carbon fuels access into meaningful progress on decarbonisation."

Lory Urdaneta, Senior Director Energy Strategy at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, commented: "This biofuel operation in Piraeus reflects the kind of pragmatic progress we're making under our Sail & Sustain program. It's one more way we're scaling lower-carbon solutions across our fleet while maintaining the guest experience we're known for. Collaborating with partners like World Fuel and EKO enables us to accelerate our decarbonisation efforts and extend our sustainability impact across new geographies."

Chrisanthopoulos Konstantinos, Manager, Marine Fuels & Services Division at EKO, remarked: "EKO is proud to contribute to this important milestone in Greece. By supplying waste-based biofuels locally, we are demonstrating the readiness of the market and the potential for wider adoption across the Mediterranean."

EKO, a member of HelleniQ Energy, has supplied marine fuels and lubricants in Greece since 1984, serving cruise ships, container vessels, coastal operators, and international fleets across Greek ports.

Headquartered in Miami, Florida, World Fuel Services is one of the world's leading sellers of bunker fuel, with marine revenue of $7,885.1 million and bunker sales volume of 15.8 million metric tonnes over the 12-month period to September 2025.
