BIMCO delays biofuel clause for time charters to spring 2026


Maritime organisation pushes back publication to address safety, technical requirements, and industry feedback.

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) has adjusted the publication schedule for its upcoming Biofuel Clause for Time Charter Parties, moving the planned release from late 2025 to early spring 2026. The organisation said the revised schedule allows additional time to assess safety considerations, technical requirements, and the substantial feedback received from its Documentary Committee and broader industry consultation group.

According to BIMCO, the new clause is being developed to set out clear responsibilities, specifications, and procedures for the supply and use of biofuels under time charter arrangements. The aim is to help owners and charterers manage the operational risks associated with alternative fuels while supporting their decarbonisation strategies.

A key part of the work involves defining what is meant by “biofuel,” including the recognition of accepted standards for fuel specifications and blends. BIMCO said the clause will also provide flexibility for alternative arrangements, provided they undergo appropriate testing and approval processes.

Fuel quality and suitability are central to the discussions. The clause is expected to address requirements for stability and compatibility with vessel engines, as well as procedures for dealing with non-compliant fuel, including corrective measures.

BIMCO added that preparations needed before using biofuels are another core focus area, including tank cleaning requirements and crew competence. The group is also reviewing issues such as segregation of batches or grades, and rules governing commingling or the use of additives.

Commercial and performance implications are also being reviewed, such as how speed and consumption warranties might be adjusted to reflect the lower calorific value of biofuels compared to conventional fuels.

Practical items such as notice requirements, consumption timelines, and procedures for handling any remaining biofuel on board at redelivery are also under examination, with the goal of improving clarity and reducing potential disputes between owners and charterers.

BIMCO said the clause, once finalised, is intended to offer a balanced framework that supports decarbonisation and the safe and effective use of biofuels while managing the associated operational and contractual risks across the industry.
