HD Hyundai has secured a $1.46bn order from HMM for eight 13,400-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships, according to an announcement from the South Korean shipbuilder.

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), the intermediate holding company for HD Hyundai's shipbuilding business, said on November 23 that the contract represents the company's largest container ship order volume since 2007, when it secured orders for 793,473 TEU during the shipbuilding supercycle.

The vessels will measure 337 metres in length, 51 metres in width, and 27.9 metres in height. They will be equipped with LNG dual-fuel engines and fuel tanks that are approximately 50% larger than standard configurations, according to the announcement.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build two of the vessels, while HD Hyundai Samho will construct the remaining six. Deliveries are scheduled through the first half of 2029.

HD KSOE said it has secured orders for 720,000 TEU across 69 container ships in 2025, which it claims is the highest order volume among domestic shipbuilders this year.

The company said its container ships are equipped with HiNAS Control, an autonomous navigation assistance system developed by Avikus, a subsidiary specializing in autonomous navigation technology. According to HD Hyundai, operational data has shown the system delivers a 15% reduction in carbon emissions and a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency.
