The European Commission has selected 70 projects to receive over €600 million in funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to expand alternative-fuels infrastructure across the EU.

More specifically, the projects cover 24 EU countries and include support for 24 maritime ports deploying on-shore power supply systems and developing ammonia-bunkering infrastructure, alongside new hydrogen refuelling stations, electricity supply upgrades, and methanol bunkering facilities.

The EU Commission says the funding will significantly expand the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), with more than 500 new publicly accessible charging locations for lorries and other heavy vehicles, including megawatt chargers.

“We are currently supporting 70 projects with €600 million in EU funding to accelerate the deployment of alternative-fuels infrastructure across Europe,” said EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas. “These investments will strengthen our competitiveness and help make the transition to zero-emission mobility easier and more accessible for all citizens,” he also added.

The projects were selected under the second cut-off of the 2024–2025 Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) call, which closed on 11 June 2025. Additionally, following endorsement by EU member states on 13 November, the Commission will formally adopt the award decision.

However, due to the exhaustion of funds, the third cut-off will be cancelled. Nevertheless, the Commission will assess potential reflows and subsequently prepare a new work programme and call for proposals in the coming months.

AFIF complements the ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime regulations aimed at decarbonising the aviation and maritime sectors.

With these new projects, more than €2.5 billion in EU grants have been allocated to alternative fuels projects through AFIF since 2021.
