Dan-Bunkering has announced the relocation of James Shiller, its Global Lead of New Fuels, from Cape Town to the company's Copenhagen office as part of efforts to support customers navigating the maritime energy transition.

The move comes as regulatory frameworks including the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime drive decarbonisation across the sector.

Michel Dominique Thomsen, Commercial Director at Dan-Bunkering Europe, commented: "The maritime sector is undergoing an important transformation, and our customers are looking for clarity and confidence as they adapt to alternative fuels and regulations. Having James in Copenhagen brings our global expertise closer to the European market."

Shiller joined Dan-Bunkering's Cape Town office in 2019 and has built a reputation in the market as an expert in compliance with decarbonisation regulations, according to the company. Reflecting on the move, Shiller said: "We are constantly striving to reduce the compliance burden for our maritime customers. I am looking forward to being closer to customers and supporting them with industry-leading advice and best practices."

The firm said Shiller has been involved in training more than 90 Dan-Bunkering fuel suppliers worldwide and will continue to educate the team on developments in low-carbon fuels across all Dan-Bunkering offices.

The EU ETS requires shipping companies to surrender allowances for 70% of their emissions reported in 2025, up from 40% in 2024. FuelEU Maritime, which entered into force on January 1, 2025, sets requirements to lower the greenhouse gas intensity of energy used on board ships calling at EU ports, starting with a 2% reduction in 2025.

Founded in 1981, Dan-Bunkering operates as a seller of marine fuel from 12 offices globally. Other services include risk management and marine lubricant sales.
