ScanOcean has completed its first carbon inset transaction as part of a new environmental service.
The marine fuel company's Inset Solutions programme enables shipowners to operate with ISCC-certified biofuels at what the company claims is a reduced net fuel cost. Meanwhile, transport buyers, including cargo owners and freight forwarders, can purchase third-party-verified greenhouse gas reductions through book-and-claim mechanisms to support their Scope 3 emissions reduction targets.
According to ScanOcean, the approach is designed to provide transparency and traceability while delivering measurable environmental impact. The company said the service helps clients align business operations with sustainability goals and regulatory requirements.
The ISCC certification system provides sustainability verification for biofuels and other renewable materials used in various industries, including marine transport, whilst the book-and-claim system allows companies to purchase environmental attributes from sustainable fuel use without requiring physical delivery of the alternative fuel to their specific shipments.
Carbon insets differ from traditional carbon offsets by focusing on emissions reductions within a company's own value chain rather than supporting external projects.
ScanOcean has named Business Development Manager Lars Lövsund as the contact point for organisations interested in discussing inset solutions.
The company is a physical bunker supplier in numerous Swedish ports, including Stockholm, Gothenburg, Gävle and Norrköping, and is also a bunker trader. Last month, ScanOcean launched its first office outside of Sweden, in London, in a move designed to expand its global bunker trading operations.
