Liquid Wind and Umeå Energi have signed agreements to commercialise a large-scale e-fuel production facility in Umeå, Sweden, following the granting of an environmental permit by the Land and Environmental Court.
The facility, named FlagshipTHREE, will be co-located with Umeå Energi's cogeneration plant Dåvaverket in the Umeå Eco Industrial Park and is designed to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually. The plant will capture 150,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ through carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technology and is expected to be operational in 2028.
The facility is one of the largest industrial investments in northern Sweden and will serve as part of the Umeå Eco Industrial Park — a regional innovation hub focused on circular economy, electrification, and climate-neutral industrial development.
The park is designed to foster industrial symbiosis, enabling businesses to optimise resource flows, reduce emissions, and minimise waste. By utilising residual or waste materials and energy from neighbouring operations, the facility is expected to contribute to a more efficient and sustainable industrial ecosystem.
Liquid Wind also notes that boosting domestic production of e-fuels strengthens energy resilience from local, Swedish, and European perspectives by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and enhancing supply chain security.
Claes Fredriksson, CEO and founder of Liquid Wind, commented: "Our e-fuel project in Umeå is now ready for commercialisation. Reaching this point is an achievement for our team, and we are grateful for the strong and constructive cooperation with Umeå Energi throughout the process. With all agreements finalised and the environmental permit secured, we are entering a new phase — one that offers investors a clear path to climate impact and long-term value."
Jan Ridfeldt, CEO of Umeå Energi, remarked: "Our collaboration with Liquid Wind reinforces Umeå Energi's position in clean energy innovation. The e-fuel facility is not only a climate investment — it's a strategic infrastructure project that will strengthen the region's industrial competitiveness."
Construction is planned to start in 2026, with the facility expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 180,000 tonnes annually once operational.
Liquid Wind develops e-fuel production facilities and has a pipeline of facility projects in development with the goal of reaching 10 projects by 2027. The company is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. Its investors include Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Elyse Energy, HYCAP, Samsung Ventures, Siemens Energy, Topsoe, and Uniper.
