Taiwanese container shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport has signed a contract with South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean to construct seven 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels.
The vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029, Yang Ming said in an online post on September 17.
The ships will feature LNG dual-fuel technology that Yang Ming claims will cut greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20% compared to conventional fuel systems. The vessels will also be ammonia fuel ready, positioning them for potential zero-carbon operations as the alternative fuel becomes commercially available.
According to Yang Ming, the boxships will be equipped with the world's first Type-B LNG fuel tank system, designed to enhance safety and efficiency compared to existing tank designs.
Yang Ming operates a fleet of container vessels serving routes across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The company has been expanding its presence in the LNG-fuelled vessel segment as part of its decarbonisation strategy.
Hanwha Ocean, formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, is a leading Korean shipbuilder together with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). It has secured multiple orders for LNG-powered vessels and recently became the first to deliver its 200th LNG carrier, in February 2025.
