Nordic energy company Gasum and gas shipping company Anthony Veder are expanding their partnership to meet FuelEU Maritime requirements through bio-LNG deployment.

Two Anthony Veder LNG carriers chartered by Gasum — Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE — will operate on bio-LNG, contributing compliance surplus to Gasum's FuelEU Maritime pool. Anthony Veder is also joining Gasum's pool with additional vessels from its fleet to secure regulatory compliance.

"We are very pleased that we can sail both Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE on bio-LNG. This will enable us to flexibly expand the capacity for our FuelEU Maritime pool even further, as demand is heating up towards the end of the first year of the regulation," said Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum.

The partnership allows Anthony Veder to manage FuelEU Maritime requirements through what the company describes as a cost-effective approach.

"We at Anthony Veder are very happy that our vessels Coral Energy and Coral EnergICE will be running on bio-LNG and contributing to emission reductions in the maritime sector. Joining Gasum's FuelEU Maritime pool was a natural continuation of our long-time partnership, as we found the service to be the most cost-effective and reliable way to manage the requirements of the regulation," said Björn van de Weerdhof, Commercial and Sustainability Director at Anthony Veder.

The European Union's FuelEU Maritime regulation requires ship owners to decrease the carbon intensity of fuel used by vessels by 2% from the start of 2025. The required reduction will increase progressively every five years up to 80% by 2050.

The regulation allows for vessel pooling, where one vessel can compensate for emission reductions on behalf of another.

In Gasum's pool, dedicated vessels run on bio-LNG to generate compliance that is allocated to other ships. The firm notes that it both manages the pool and supplies the required amount of bio-LNG to the compliance generator vessels, with DNV validating the pool's balance.

Anthony Veder operates a fleet of 28 gas tankers. The Rotterdam-based company has been involved in gas shipping since acquiring its first gas tanker in 1969.
