ESL Shipping has completed model tests for its Green Handy methanol-powered vessel project, with results said to have surpassed performance targets ahead of planned construction starting in summer 2026.

The tests were conducted at the SSPA facility in Gothenburg to verify the vessel's performance against design calculations. Technical Director Janne Eklöf commented: "The results not only confirmed but also slightly exceeded our performance targets. The tests provided valuable insights into the hull's behaviour."

The Baltic carrier has appointed Saila Piipari, formerly site supervisor for the Green Coaster project, to oversee the Green Handy development. Piipari will work from the office before travelling to China to supervise construction at the shipyard.

Current preparations include plan approval and finalising the supplier list for main equipment including engines, hybrid systems, and cargo cranes. Technical Superintendent Saila Piipari said: "The design work is progressing well, and we are working closely with Deltamarin and the shipyard to ensure that the final design meets our requirements."

The vessels will have a deadweight of 17,000 tonnes, measuring 149.9 metres in length and 23.77 metres in breadth, with a shallow draft of 8.6 metres and 1A ice class rating.

Steel production is scheduled to begin in summer 2026, with the first vessel delivery planned for the third quarter of 2027.

Managing Director Mikki Koskinen highlighted the company's approach to newbuilding projects, stating: "Our success in newbuilding projects stems from maintaining ship management and shipbuilding expertise in-house. These projects also provide excellent opportunities for internal job rotation."

ESL Shipping operates in the Baltic region as a dry bulk carrier. The company, which has been in business for over 75 years, is a subsidiary of Aspo Plc. Together with AtoB@C Shipping, the combined fleet consists of around 40 vessels with cargo capacity ranging from 4,000 to 25,000 dwt.
