Asphalt tanker sinks off Bintan


Singapore-registered vessel sinks carrying unconfirmed amount of marine fuel.

The Singapore-registered asphalt tanker AB9 sank off the east coast of Pulau Bintan, Indonesia, on Thursday afternoon, carrying an unconfirmed amount of marine fuel.

The vessel, owned by Singapore-based AB1 Shipping Pte. Ltd., was listing off the Indonesian island at around 15:10 hours local time and was subsequently reported to have sunk at approximately 17:00 hours, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement on Thursday evening.

At the time of the incident, the vessel was said to have been on her way from Singapore to Sumbawa, Indonesia.

The 14 crew, all Thai nationals, were reported to have been rescued by the Indonesian Navy.

Full details regarding what the vessel was carrying were not immediately available.
