MARPOL Annex VI: IAPP Certificate update

23 Nov 2009 14:07 GMT

Latest update on the issuance of the new International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) Certificate.

Hamburg-based classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has issued a statement today regarding the new International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) Certificate.

In the statement, GL says "The Revised MARPOL Annex VI will enter into force on 2010-07-01 with the utmost probability and applies to all ships. In order to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the Revised MARPOL Annex VI, for ships with a gross tonnage of 400 GT and above engaged in voyages to ports or offshore terminals under the jurisdiction of other Parties and for platforms and drilling rigs engaged in voyages to waters under the sovereignty or jurisdiction of other Parties, the new International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) Certificate shall be issued (reg. 6, 1).

"Ships constructed (keel-laying date) on or after 2010-07-01 will have to be issued with the new IAPP Certificate upon delivery before the ship is put in service.

"Ships constructed (keel-laying date) before 2010-07-01 will have to be issued with the new IAPP Certificate no later than the first scheduled dry docking after the date of entry into force, but in no case later than three years after that date (reg. 6, 2).

"For issuance of the new IAPP Certificate, the initial survey according to the Revised MARPOL Annex VI will have to be performed," GL said.
