DNV GL has announced that it has replaced its LNG information platform, LNGi, with the newly named Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) offering.

AFI - which has been developed with partners Shell, Wartsila, Caterpillar, SEA\LNG, Skangas, WinGD and Yara Marine - provides an overview of the uptake, infrastructure and development of alternative fuels in shipping.

It is an open-access platform which includes details on existing and planned LNG bunkering infrastructure, detailed information and a status on ships with LNG fuel, as well as scrubbers and batteries installed.

AFI employs maps and interactive data visualisation techniques to graphically illustrate where infrastructure is already available, being developed or under discussion and to show where ships using alternative fuels and technologies are already operating.

Users can drill down into the raw data and conduct deeper trend analysis with the aid of statistical tools for filtering and analysing adoption of alternative fuels by fuel type, technology, region and other key parameters.

"The shipping industry is under increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and other harmful emissions. A growing list of non-traditional fuel types and technological solutions have been proposed to meet these targets. To assist ship owners navigate through this rapidly changing and constantly evolving landscape, AFI provides an extensive knowledge bank on alternative fuels such as LNG, LPG, methanol, biofuel and hydrogen as well as related emerging technologies such as scrubbers, batteries and fuel-cells. Their capabilities and any limitations are explained, alongside practical insights into their implementation and operation," DNV GL says.
