Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) have signed a collaboration framework agreement with Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) (CHI Dalian) to manufacture and market rectangular-shaped sulphur oxide (SOx) scrubbers.

The new scrubber design, which was developed by the aforementioned two Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group businesses, is said to offer space-saving benefits for onboard installations.

The project combines MHPS's experience with exhaust gas treatment technologies - developed through its exhaust gas desulphurization systems for thermal power plants - with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding's marine engineering expertise.

"By installing the desulfurization system, with its strong track record, efficiently within the limited space available on a ship, the amount of SO2 contained in the vessel's exhaust gas when using conventional 3.5% sulfur-content fuel can be reduced to a level that conforms to the new emissions regulations coming into effect worldwide in 2020," MHI said.

According to the newly signed collaborative framework agreement, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, MHPS and CHI Dalian will start incorporating the scrubber in all processes - including design, manufacture and onboard installation - in a collaborative relationship designed to offer overall customer convenience.

Under the agreement, CHI Dalian will manufacture, assemble and deliver the SOx scrubbers and install them on ships, whilst Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and MHPS will be focused on selling and marketing the technology.
