GTT reports that it has sealed a contract with Norwegian shipyard Vard for the supply of LNG tanks to the expedition ship Ponant Icebreaker.

The vessel, which is scheduled for delivery in 2021, is set to be the world's first electric hybrid cruise icebreaker with LNG propulsion. It will be operated by Ponant, a specialist in luxury polar expeditions.

Specially designed to run on LNG as a fuel, the tanks will be equipped with GTT's Mark III membrane technology - already widely used in the field of LNG transportation.

GTT will be responsible for the construction of the tanks and will be in charge of selecting and coordinating its subcontractors - offering a turnkey solution to its partners Vard and Ponant.

The Ponant Icebreaker is intended for polar expeditions lasting from two weeks to a month. Thanks to the 4,500-cubic-metre capacity of its two tanks, the ship will be capable of using LNG during an entire trip.

According to GTT, the ship's performance is made possible due to the compactness of GTT's membrane containment system which optimizes the payload in very restrained spaces, thereby increasing the autonomy of the ship.

"The Ponant Icebreaker is a real world first. It is the first luxury ship with Ice Class PC2 certification ever designed, with electric hybrid engine and propelled by LNG, it is a pioneer in terms of sustainable cruising and environment protection", commented Jean Emmanuel Sauvee, CEO of Ponant.

Philippe Berterottiere, chairman and CEO of GTT, remarked: "This project sets an important milestone in the development of the LNG as a fuel. GTT is proud to bring its expertise to Ponant and Vard, two important players of the maritime world, for the supply of the tanks of this particularly innovative and environmentally friendly ship."

Key features of the Ponant Icebreaker:

- Reduction of SO2, NOX, CO2 and particle emissions when running on LNG;

- Zero emissions when in electric hybrid mode;

- Use of advanced diesel engine technology;

Energy management:

- Energy optimisation system that precisely measures consumption and offers optimisation of ship sailing methods;

- Waste Heat Recovery System;

- Electric output optimised and consumption reduced through the use of electric batteries.
