Basque Country firm Itsas Gas Bunker Supply SL has secured a contract with Cepsa to supply vessels at the port of Huelva, Spanish newspaper Expansion reports.

Cepsa is using Itsas Gas's multipurpose barge Oizmendi to perform ship-to-ship deliveries at the Andalucian port, with supply operations said to have already commenced.

As Bunker Index previously reported, the double-hull barge Oizmendi was presented by Cepsa during a ceremony in Huelva less than a month ago.

The vessel is able to hold up to 600 cubic metres (cbm) of LNG, plus 1,900 tonnes of fuel oil and 470 tonnes of diesel.

The Oizmendi, formerly called Monte Arucas, had to undergo a significant transformation in order to be able to hold two large 300-cbm LNG tanks in addition to its conventional fuel oil tanks. The barge also features mass flow meter technology for the measurement of bunker deliveries.

The project to convert the Oizmendi took seven months to complete at the Murueta shipyard in northern Spain, with Itsas Gas investing EUR 5.5 million.

The conversion forms part of a Basque region initiative - funded by the European Commission through the Core LNGas Hive project - that also includes adapting Bahia de Bizkaia Gas's (BBG) dock and regasification plant, and the design and construction of an LNG-powered tug.

The Oizmendi will be able to source product from Enagas's regasification plant in Huelva, which comprises five tanks with a total LNG capacity of 619,500 cbm.

Back in February, the Oizmendi also performed the Bay of Biscay's first ship-to-ship LNG bunker delivery - to the dry cargo vessel MV Ireland.

Cepsa is Spain's leading marine fuel supplier, and claims to have a 50 percent market share in the country.

During 2017, Madrid-headquartered Cepsa says it performed more than 6,000 ship-to-ship operations in total, supplying more than 4 million tonnes.
