EMSA releases 430-page LNG bunkering guidance

06 Feb 2018 13:20 GMT

Document for port authorities and administrations is designed to support the use of LNG as a marine fuel.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on Tuesday published a 430-page guidance document on liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering for port authorities and administrations.

The release of the guidance is designed to support the use of LNG as a marine fuel as part of a joint effort to increase sustainability.

The document was prepared in cooperation with the European Commission, member states and stakeholders within the context of the European Sustainable Shipping Forum (ESSF).

The LNG bunkering guidance is another element in the EU's strategy to support the development of alternative fuels for shipping foreseen by Directive 2014/94/EU.

Alternative shipping fuels are also supported through funding instruments, including the Green Shipping Guarantee (GSG) programme, whose first transaction was recently announced for the financing of an LNG-powered ferry, the Honfleur (operated by Brittany Ferries), which is expected to enter into service in April 2019.
