Bunker-themed playlist for end-of-year office party

11 Dec 2017 11:23 GMT

Key topics of the year covered in marine fuel tracklist.

With the end-of-year office party season in full swing, Bunker Index has decided to put together a marine-fuel-themed, 30-track playlist to complement the annual get-together of work colleagues.

In addition to incorporating some key industry terms, the playlist also covers some of the main events and talking points of 2017.

One of the year's main topics of conversation has been regarding whether certain shipowners will decide to install exhaust gas scrubbers and continue to use cheaper, high-sulphur fuel after 2020, or start using low-sulphur fuel that complies with the 0.5 percent global sulphur limit. Thus, the decision earlier this year by Maersk to choose the low-sulphur option is represented in the playlist by TLC's car-passenger-baiting R&B track 'No scrubs'. We also enter the jazz genre with 'Scrubber time', by Jack Parnell and His Quartet, to highlight Carnival completing the installation of scrubbers on 60 ships across its fleet in February and its plan to deploy them on more than 85 vessels by 2020.

The upcoming 0.5 percent cap is represented by American heavy metal band Slipknot and its track 'Sulfur', plus similar-titled (with UK spelling) 'Sulphur' by 80s/90s group House of Love. SBTRKT's electronic tune '2020' is also included in the list, as is Iron Maiden's 'Holy smoke' - in a nod to emission levels.

Another key theme of 2017 has been digitilization. We have seen new hybrid online bunker procurement services launched and an updated version of Brightoil's online trading platform. Additionally, Shell and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in the research and development and test-bedding of projects relating to electronic data, automation, intelligent systems and cleaner energy. These events are referenced by the inclusion of Joy Division's 1978-released 'Digital', and club classic 'Zdarlight' by German electronic music duo Digitalism.

Fuel quality has been another key issue of this year. In October, Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) reported that the most problematic parameter for distillates in 2017 has been flash point, whilst for residual fuel it has been density followed by catalytic (cat) fines. Included in the playlist, therefore, is dancefloor anthem 'Flash' by Green Velvet, 'Density' by Sam Prekop, and 'Good thing' by Fine Young Cannibals.

In January, Singapore was the world's first port to implement the compulsory use of mass flow metering (MFM) systems for marine fuel oil (MFO) deliveries. This milestone for the industry is represented in the playlist by British songstress Sade with the track 'Flow', and 'Meter' by electropop band Kaleida, which includes the chorus "keep the meter running" - appearing to almost echo the MPA's insistence on MFMs being operated properly without unauthorised alterations.

Also in Singapore, we saw further issues with aerated - or cappuccino - bunkers, with one supplier, Universal Energy, having its bunker supply licence withdrawn as a result. Added to the playlist, therefore, is 'Capuccino' [sic] by Herbie Garrett, and a tune by Los Angeles alternative indie band Froth called 'General education'.

Other singles making up the end-of-year list include 'Delivery' by England's Babyshambles; Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours by Stevie Wonder; November-released drum and bass track 'Bunker' by Culture Shock; 'I like it' by Debarge; and 'Rose' by 60s group Fifty Foot Hose.
