Corvus to power first hybrid fish farm processing vessel

23 Oct 2017 09:34 GMT

Orca Energy ESS to supply electrical power to Hav Line ship's propulsion system.

Corvus Energy has been selected by Wartsila as the supplier of a lithium-ion-based energy storage system (ESS) for the world's first full-service hybrid fish farm processing and transport vessel.

The Orca Energy ESS from Corvus will supply electrical power to the vessel's propulsion system to reduce emissions and lower operational costs.

Wartsila has been contracted to deliver the ship design and hybrid propulsion system for the vessel to be built at the Balenciaga shipyard in Spain for Norwegian firm Hav Line AS.

The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2018.

Back in August, Wartsila revealed that it had been contracted by Hav Line to deliver the vessel design and also supply an integrated solution comprising a 10-cylinder Wartsila 31 main engine, auxiliary engines, propulsion machinery, the propulsion remote control system, and the electrical and automation system.

Wartsila claims that by absorbing most of the engine's load fluctuations and vessel load variations through batteries, the engines can be operated close to its optimum design point, thereby providing the highest level of efficiency, which in turn minimizes the exhaust emissions.

The vessel's hybrid propulsion machinery has the power take-in/ power take-off (PTI/PTO) powered by batteries, and is combined with the fuel-efficient Wartsila 31 main engine.

"Corvus is extremely proud that Orca has once again been chosen by Wartsila to power industry-leading vessels like this one," commented Willie Wagen, Global VP Sales & Marketing of Corvus Energy, adding: "This project is further proof that leveraging battery power for hybrid and all-electric vessels is expanding across all vessel types."

Corvus says it now has more than 100 projects utilizing a Corvus ESS, with over 75 megawatt hours (MWh) and 1.5 million operating hours.
