Corvus Energy battery system ordered for three hybrid fishing vessels

Orca Energy ESS to supply electrical power to the propulsion systems and electrical networks.



Maritime electronics firm Elmarin AS has selected Corvus Energy as the supplier of lithium-ion-based energy storage systems (ESS) for three new hybrid fishing vessels.

Corvus's Orca Energy ESS will supply electrical power to the fishing vessels' propulsion systems and electrical networks to enable environmentally friendly and lower cost operations.

Each fishing vessel will be equipped with an ESS, with capacity of approximately 250 kilowatts hours (kWh). The vessels are expected to be delivered in mid-2018.

"This project is a good example of how the marine industry is quickly moving towards hybrid power for more cost effective and environmentally friendly operations," commented Halvard Hauso, SVP Business Development of Corvus Energy, adding: "The Orca ESS product line was designed to meet the needs of a wide range of vessels. The adoption by fishing vessels is a great validation of this."

"We had the privilege to work closely with an enthusiastic ship owner who really wanted to make a difference, and together with several other competent partners we designed a complete solution for the vessels that meets all the requirements for this application, said Lars Eide, head of electric propulsion systems at Elmarin AS.

"The battery system is a very important factor to the whole solution. Thanks to financial support from Enova, the projects will now be realized and we believe they will be a trendsetter for this market. For Elmarin, a relatively new player in this market segment, the well-proven solutions from Corvus and the competent team located here in Norway made Corvus a safe and reliable choice for us and we are looking forward to working with the Corvus team in the near future."

According to Corvus, more than 90 installations totaling over 50MWh and 1.5 million operating hours have already been carried out utilizing its ESS solutions.
