| Tuomas Riski, CEO of Norsepower Oy Ltd, has today been announced as the winner of Nor-Shipping's Young Entrepreneur Award 2017.|
The 38-year-old Finn was chosen from a final shortlist that included Joel Spark, co-founder of Spire, Xeneta CEO Patrik Berglund, and Christine Spiten, co-founder of Blueye Robotics.
Nor-Shipping's Young Entrepreneur Award, a joint initiative with YoungShip, focuses on innovators, all of whom must be under 40, working to address critical industry issues.
Norsepower has developed a modernised version of the Flettner rotor - a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to propel a ship. The solution, designed for both newbuilds and retrofitting, is said to have the potential to slash bunker fuel costs in favourable wind conditions.
"Tuomas and Norsepower encapsulate the very essence of this award," commented Nor-Shipping Director Birgit Liodden.
"Their technology is a potential game-changer for an industry facing increasing cost and environmental constraints. It ranks as the first proven commercially available auxiliary propulsion system that can harness natural wind power in this way. As such, it has the potential to not only drive forward single vessels, but also our entire industry's sustainability credentials."
In March, Bunker Index reported that Norsepower is teaming up with Maersk Tankers, The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), and Shell Shipping & Maritime in a project that will install and trial Flettner rotor sails on board a Maersk Tankers-owned vessel.
The project is set to be the first installation of wind-powered energy technology on a product tanker vessel, and is expected to provide insights into fuel savings.
Earlier this month, Birgit Liodden said that the upcoming Nor-Shipping event was "an incredible opportunity for our delegates, and the wider industry, to not only take the pulse of the clean energy movement, but also witness the strategies, partnerships and projects that will drive it forward".
"Clean maritime fuels are the future and we, at Nor-Shipping, want to play our part in realizing their huge potential," she added.
